Is Fitness Easy With Cerebral Palsy
The short answer to this is NO. Some might beg to differ but for me it isn’t. The reason is so many things go into getting your body to listen to what you want it to do. An everyday person probably doesn’t have to think about it when they get asked to balance on one foot. But someone with CP does.
Have you ever gotten on a treadmill (baring any injuries) and wondered if you’d be able to maintain a steady pace? Or maybe you decide to run around your block. Would you question if you might trip and fall just because of a lift in the sidewalk?
These are just some of the simple daily things that run through my head.
Or take being a kid. How many kids do you see jumping rope? This was something I could never do. But I tried. Skipping to lunch? Not possible for me. I wanted so much to be able to partake in thos childhood past times. But my body and brain were constantly at odds.
I grew up for a long time only being able to balance and push myself with a razor scooter (you know the two wheeler that was all the rage in the early 2000s). My mom held on to that thing for longer than necesary only to give me something to physically be able to do. It was the only thing I could balance on for the longest time.
Other physical ways to get a child’s energy spent were not easy for me. And we’ll explore those as we go!
