Sidewalk Curbs In My Way
As the title of this suggests… Yes a curb was in MY way. During the Christmas season my partner and I had decide to do a couple of fun activities every year and this occurrence happened to pause all of that. If you’ve ever been to San Diego, you know it is a military town with connections for the navy with a port downtown that crosses over to Corranado. In this bay around this time the ships in the bay dress up there boats with lights and various Christmas decorations. On a specific day they drive them around the bay for everyone who comes to see.
We had decided to take one of our puppies with us and watch them go by. Crossing the street to get there on a busy highway, I started rushing to beat the timed light. In my haste, and with little regard to my perpensity to fall, I stepped off the curb and lost my balance fast. As I’ve mentioned before, tripping and falling is a regular occurrence that doesn’t shock me.
But this was different. “The curb should not have been there!” was my response to this happening. And let’s be honest, it was the curbs fault.
The initial interaction hurt like hell. But I told my partner I was only a little hurt and we should continue on with our plans. They very reluctantly agreed. But by the time it was over and we returned home my ankle was huge. Swollen and angry. I was lucky my partner knew how to take care of it. I followed their instruction and began wearing a brace (one you find at CVS) the next day.
If the curb had not been there maybe none of this would’ve happened? But I can’t difinatively say that because only 2 days later I slipped getting out of the shower and my ankle swelled again.
When you trip and fall as often as I have with Cerebral Palsy over the years, you get used to getting hurt and getting back up and continuing on anyway, regardless of others worried about your safety. Honestly, maybe it’s that or maybe it’s me being stubborn 🤷🏻♀️. We may never know.
Despite my insistence that I would be okay, my partner made sure I went to urgent care the next day. With one X-Ray my two falls resulted in a high sprain. Any more falling and I could’ve easily fractured my ankle. For Christmas this year the universe gave me a boot to hobble my way around in.
Walking and stairs are more tricky than they were before. And I will be navigating this change for the next 4-6 weeks. But to steal a phrase from a friend, “I will make CP my bitch!” 😉 EVEN with a boot.
